Obituary for Adolph L. Tyler
Honoring the Life & Legacy of Our Beloved Adolph L. Tyler Sunrise: 01/28/1923 - Sunset: 09/04/2018
Adolph (Doc) L. Tyler, was born January 28, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Theodore and Virginia Tyler. A native of Philadelphia, Doc was educated in the Philadelphia Public Schools and graduated from Overbrook High School. In 1943, Doc was drafted into the US Army during World War II and honorably served his country. One story he shared often was of his experience in the war and of the troops being transported to Europe in the QE2 luxury liner but returning on a leaky boat that water had to be bailed out of just to stay afloat. Upon his discharge in 1945, Doc attended Lincoln University where he met the love of his life, Juanita Mack. They married in 1955 and to this union was born a daughter, Anita L. Tyler-Goodrich. For the next 35 years he worked for the US Postal Service.
He enjoyed and participated in various sports including track and boxing. He believed in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was very active in his church, Saint Philip’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. He served as Assistant and Financial Secretary. He held various offices in the Postal Union. Doc was a member of the Lambd’s which consisted of the spouses of the members of the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority until he and Juanita joined Anita in Harrisburg, PA in 2000. Anita has many fond memories of growing up with the strict side of Doc; however, once she became an adult, she learned the softer side of him. Doc was a kind-hearted spirit and loved spending time with his family.
One day in particular, Doc and Anita visited the Forum in Harrisburg for the annual MLK Showcase. There they witnessed a young girl performing an original poem titled “My Daddy”. The poem itself was well written for a girl of her age; however, Anita and Doc couldn’t help but find the humor in the young girl’s country twang every time she said “Daaaaddy”. As a result, this became one of those inside jokes that only the two of them would understand. Anita used this country twang to sometimes greet her dad which provided the two of them countless hours of laughter.
Adolph L. Tyler transitioned from this life on September 4, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Mack; his sisters Helene Moore, Viola Jackson; and great-grandson Alijah Goodrich. Loving him but letting him go, is his daughter Anita Goodrich and her husband Ronald; grandchildren Austin (Melinda) Goodrich and Adam Goodrich; great-grandchildren Laylah E. Williams, Aliyah Tyler Goodrich, and Amare Tyler Goodrich; and nephew Ronald Moore all of Harrisburg, PA. He will also be sadly missed by his caretaker of the past seven years, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.
The celebration of Adolph’s life will begin with a viewing on Thursday, September 13, 2018 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services will start at 11:00 am at Wood Funeral Home, Inc. 5537-39 W. Girard Avenue in Philadelphia, PA, 19131 followed by interment at West Laurel Hill Mausoleum of Peace.
