Barbara Ann McKnight was born to the late Alexander and Alice Pinckney
on May 6, 1941 in Newark, New Jersey. She was one of eight of children. She
was proceeded in death by three brothers Seymour Pinckney, Ronald Pinckney and
Richard Jones. Two Sisters: Bernice Hicks, Alpharetta Pinckney and one grandson
Daryl Devlin.
Barbara was educated in the Newark public school system. She later
studied at the University of Long Island, New York, and acquired a nursing degree
from Middlesex County College in 1981. She completed RWJ Hospital’s
Chaplaincy Program and served diligently as a Chaplain for many years.
Barbara enjoyed teaching and working with youth for many years. As a
nursing professional, she worked with people with various disabilities. In the mid-
nineties, she began teaching at Edison Job Corps, training Home Health Aides until
she retired in 2007 after 30 years of service. She continued private-duty nursing for
several years after retirement.
Barbara married James McKnight in 1959. Their union resulted in three
handsome sons whom she loved dearly.
Barbara was a woman of great faith. She believed in her Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ, with all her heart. She was a member of First Baptist Church of
Lincoln Gardens, where she was a Sunday school instructor and a part of the
Missionary Ministry. She was always willing and ready to spread God’s Word. As a
testament to her character, her humanitarian work was recognized by the NAACP.
Barbara had a simple plan for the salvation of others: “Tell them about God’s
Love.” She always depended on the Holy Spirit to guide her in her evangelism
work. One of Barbara’s favorite Bible verses is Luke 4:18: “The Spirit of the Lord
is upon Me, Because He has appointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He
has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And
recovery of sight for the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed.”
Barbara McKnight’s most cherished Bible verse was Psalm 23. She went
from labor to reward and is resting in His arms. She will have the pleasure of
hearing, “Well done, my good and faithful servant...” She was truly loved by all
who knew her.
Barbara leaves to cherish her memory two siblings: Robert Pinckney
(Karen) and Lorraine Broughton; three sons: James McKnight, Jr. (Catherine),
Michael McKnight (Olga), and Gerard McKnight (Dielita); and eight
grandchildren: Jamere, Jullanar, Jasaad, Michela, Fatimah, Ayanna, Faheem, and
Jabari McKnight. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and
friends.
