The Obituary
Barbara Elaine Johns, the oldest daughter of the late Bertha and Orley Johns, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 22, 1953. She departed this life on March 3, 2022.
Barbara was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System, receiver her dip0loma from Overbrook High School. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from California University of Pennsylvania.
Barbara loved children and enjoyed a long career as a pre-Kindergarten teacher with the Philadelphia School District, retiring in 2016. She kept in touch with many of her co-workers, often meeting them for lunch or shopping trips, or simply calling them to catch up.
Barbara Elaine, as she was affectionately known, loved to spend time with her family. From spending childhood summers with her grandparents in Cardale, PA to attending family gatherings through the years, Barbara would often comment “It was nice seeing everyone. I can’t wait until we get together again.” Barbara especially loved the family trip to Mexico and looked forward to it with anticipation.
Barbara could be quiet, but once she warmed up, she enjoyed discussing a wide variety of topics ranging from politics to music to current events. She will dearly be missed.
Barbara leaves to celebrate her memory: her siblings, Orley Johns, Jr. and Sandra Johns Akins; her nephew, Christopher Michael Johns; her nieces, Samantha Johns Price, Kimberly Karen Akins, Erica Lynn Akins and Rachel Elizabeth Akins; her aunts, Beatrice Patterson (Charles), Cecilia Hamilton (Don) and Barbara Hairston (Jackie); her uncles, James Durant (Jean), Ronald Durant and Resteen Durant (Roxanne) numerous cousins, other relatives and friends.
