The Obituary
Bernice Helen Benbow, daughter of the late Emma Mae Clark and Hilton Jones, was born on December 8, 1940 in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. Helen received her education in the Halifax County School System. At 18, Helen moved to Philadelphia, where she started her career working on jeweler’s row for several years. She later found a love for nursing where she spent over 35 years dedicated to Jefferson Hospital.
After retirement, Helen spent her days enjoying her close-knit family, baby sitting her great0grand children, who called her mom-mom and cooking many family meals. Helen’s specialty dish was sweet potatoes with caramelized pineapples, topped with warm gooey marshmallows. Helen never missed a family gathering, even with troublesome arthritis, she was sure to attend birthday parties, and even hayrides and apple picking with her grands at Linvilla Orchards.
Helen’s love for family and tradition was expressed every holiday, with her family home being the most decorated on the block for every occasion. Every Christmas, the porch would be decorated in red poinsettia flowers and visitors knew exactly when Spring was approaching because Helen and her youngest son Sean, had planted a vibrant batch of fresh flowers.
In Helen’s free time she loved watching her stories and sports, as she was a big Philadelphia Eagles and 76ers fan, playing the lottery and most importantly traveling home to North Carolina to visit her late twin sister, Hilda, who she had a very strong bond with.
Helen was proceeded in death by her dear husband, David L. Benbow. She is survived by her children, Kevin Johnson, Robin Jones and Sean Benbow, grandchildren, Latoya Brown, Shanika Jones, Brittany Jones and Dasia Jones, great grand children, Ma’kayla, Jahsir, Nyla, Malai, Kori, and Mason and host of cherished step-children, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
