The Obituary
Bettye Sue Collins Ricks was born in Ruleville, Mississippi on May 6, 1939 to Willie and Mamie Collins. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Willie, Teresa, Bobby and Joan.
Bettye attended college at Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee University, in Alabama. She moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the late 1960’s and became a Special Education teacher in the School District of Philadelphia. It was there where she met her ex-husband, Elvin Ricks, and their union produced one daughter, Bettina Ricks.
She joined Camphor United Methodist Church in 1968 under Reverend DePriest Whye Over the years, she served as the Chair of Staff Pastor Parish Committee, The Committee on Superintendency, the Nurture Committee and enjoyed a close relationship with longtime choir director, Dennis McNeill.
Bettye taught at Abigail Vare in South Philadelphia and Ludlow Elementary in North Philadelphia. In the late 1980’s, Bettye was a member of Jack and Kill of America, Inc. Philadelphia Chapter and met annually with the members of For Women Only in cities across America. She enjoyed the arts and culture scene in Philadelphia including the World Affairs Council, The Walnut Street Theater, Studio Incamminatie, Opera North, and especially the Academy of Vocal Arts. In retirement, she traveled to Europe and Hawaii, and many stops in between.
She is survived by: a daughter, Bettina; nieces and nephews in Michigan and Illinios; and Saleem Williams whom she cherished like a son.
