Obituary for Daisy Willie Lee Brewer
In Loving Memory

Daisy Brewer, the oldest of 14 children, entered into this world on August 24, 1925 in Pitt County, North Carolina to the late Robert and Velma Stephenson.  On Friday, November 4, 2011 God in His infinite wisdom called her home from labor to reward.

She received schooling from the Pitt County Training School and Shaw University.  This very talented girl was captain of her high school basketball team.  Home economics and vocal training extended her gifts well into her later years.

Daisy married Richard Green, Sr. To this union was born Richard, Jr.  After Richard's birth the family moved to Philadelphia, PA in 1949.  She became a member of Ward AME Church under the pastorate of Rev. William H. Smallwood.

When Mr. Green died, Daisy continued to nurture her son, Richard, Jr. and supported him in every endeavor including becoming a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts.  In 1955, Daisy met and later married James Brewer.  LaRoy and Sharlyn were born to this union.  They shared many years of happiness until his death in June 1981.

Daisy, the apprentice, soon became an accomplished beautician and worked in the beauty culture trade for over 40 years.  She gathered many customers and remained faithful to them even through times of sickness.  She just could not say NO to anyone!  The added benefit to each person coming to her shop was the spiritual atmosphere that prevailed.  Daisy listened to everyone, conseled and prayed with them even taking time to anoint them with oil if allowed to do so.  Anyone who came through her door:carpenters, plumbers, salespersons, the mailman(and the list goes on) would receive a blessing.  She was blessed to be the blessing.

Daisy served faithfully at Ward AME Church for over 50 years.  Her chic/stylish dress caught everyone's eye, but that didn't deter her from shouting praises to her God with resounding hallelujah's.  She served the Lord with gladness.

Daisy was appointed to the Jr. Steward Board, the Sr. Steward Board, was a member of the Mass Choir(formerly Unity), the Sr. Choir(now Chancel). As 1 of the original members of the AME Mass Choir, she served for over 25 years.  She also sang with the Women's Missionary District and Conference Choirs of the 1st Episcopal District.  Daisy loved to sing and would gladly let her voice ring out the Lord's Prayer, Hold On, I Want Jesus to Walk with Me and many other soulful melodies.  She served as worship/devotion leader for the Charlotte C. Wright Women's Missionary Society and until her death was a very caring Class Leader.  Daisy was on the Board of Directors of the Ward Federal Credit Union.  Daisy was a lifetime member of the DVA(Disabled Veteran's Association) and AARP.

Daisy had the opportunity to travel continuously until sickness prevented her from doing so.  She toured London, Hawaii, Las Vegas, the Bahamas, Nova Scotia, Alaska, throughout the South and Northeast spreading sunshine and the gospel.

Daisy's responsibilities in honor of her parent's wishes was to hold the family together, especially to keep celebrating the family reunions.  She constantly encouraged the grandchildren not to let go.

Daisy was forever grateful to God who saw her through her tests and trials.  She constantly praised Him for His goodness and was thankful to Him for keeping His promise to never leave her or forsake her.  Psalm 121 were her words to live by.  Her help came from the Lord and she in turn helped somebody daily.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory: 1 daughter, Sharlyn McMillan; 2 sons, Richard Green Jr. and James LaRoy Brewer of Philadelphia; 2 brothers; Grover(Vernice) Stevenson and Oliver(Betty) Stevenson of Raleigh, NC; 2 sisters, Theresa Ward and Eltha(Ed) Booth of Washington, NC; 1 adopted sister, Katherine Baker; 5 grandchildren, Rodetta Gasty of NJ, Khary Green, Sharleta McMillan, Randolph McMillan, Jr. and Keshawn Ransom of Philadelphia, PA; 9 great-grandchildren, host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

There will be a viewing on Saturday, November 12, 2011 9:00 AM at Ward African Methodist Episcopal Church located at 4301 Aspen Street.  The funeral service will start at 10:00 AM.  Final resting place to conclude at Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Broomall, PA.
