Obituary for Doris J. Fitzgerald
Doris was born in Philadelphia, PA to Susan and Golden Groomes. She was the youngest of five siblings. Catherine, Mary, Peggy, and Golden all cared for little Doris because she was the baby. Doris was educated in the Philadelphia school system. She and her brother and sisters were among many families on Peach Street. It has been said that there were over 100 children on the block of Peach Street.
Doris married at 17 years of age to Charles Fitzgerald and from that union Stephan Herbert was born. Doris was a skilled seamstress and made all of her clothes. She later worked with her sister Peggy in the Brown family cleaners repairing clothes. Doris had lots of fun in her younger years and was known to be the life of the party.
As the years progressed, Doris moved to Florida and lived there for about 10 years. Due to health reasons, Doris moved back to Philadelphia to be close to family. Doris has had numerous ailments throughout the years but through it all she maintained her sense of humor. Aunt Doris has always been a source of joy to the family and is very loved.
Doris is survived by Helen Groomes (sister in law), niece Carol Jackson, nephew Jerome Groomes (Raquel), nephew Carl Brown, niece LeReese Davis-Colley (Edward) and nephew Vincent Hill and various nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
