Obituary for Ernestine Bonner
Ernestine Bonner began her journey on December 28, 1928 in Birmingham, Alabama. She was the daughter of Pinkney and Beulah Lewis. Ernestine was the 6th of 7 children born to this union. She was the last of her siblings to enter into eternal rest which occurred on Friday, February 3, 2012.Mama, as she was affectionately called by those close to her, was educated in the Birmingham, Alabama School System. Ernestine later moved to Philadelphia to seek better opportunities for herself. She later persued and obtained her license in cosmetology. She was a person who loved to learn and embraced any opportunity she had to do so. By reading and taking continuing education courses, she obtained numerous diplomas and certificates, whether it was in beauty culture or construction. Mama especially enjoyed gaining an understanding in the Word of God.Ernestine believed in and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was a member of the Grace Tabernacle Christian Church in Philadelphia, PA where she studied under the leadership of the late Pastor Benjamin Tolbert. Ernestine was also considered to be an unofficial Church Mother at the Cathedral Grace Family Church in Egg Harbor Township, NJ where she frequently fellowshipped with her grandchildren.Ernestine was gainfully employed at the Quartermaster/Marine Corps as a seamstress. She was employed for another company called Botany 500, where she made men's suits. Ernestine continued moving forward, this time to Pleasantville, NJ where she was employed for Art Barlow's Awning Company. She also worked in the Pleasantville School System in the school cafeteria as a server. She enjoyed working with the children. Soon after, she joined the Laborers International Union of North America Local #415 out of Atlantic City, New Jersey where she became a shop steward on her job. After many years of service she retired. However, that didn't stop her! She went on to open up her 2nd beauty salon in Philadelphia, Generations, where she thrived as a successful business owner. Mama had a passion for keeping busy.Ernestine was married to Nathaniel Bonner, whom she has been widowed from for many years.She was affiliated with the Organization, Order of Eastern Stars (OES), Prince Hall Affiliation Chapter #80 of Sharon Hill, PA where she achieved the highest position of Worthy Matron. She was also affiliated with A. Phillip Randolph Organization. Ernestine loved her community and offered her services joyfully. She also would work the election polls and looked forward to serving. Ernestine loved her family deeply and she was always there to listen and help out whether you agreed with her or not. She leaves to cherish her memory 2 daughters, Delores L. Woods and Evelyn G. Budd; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
There will be a viewing on Saturday, February 11, 2012 9:00 AM at Grace Tabernacle Christian Church - 52nd Street & Greenway Avenue. The funeral service will follow at 10:00 AM. Final resting place to conclude at Rolling Green Memorial Park in West Chester, PA.
