Obituary for Evelyn Jeanette Shoemake
Evelyn Jeanette Irby - Shoemake was born to the late Arthur and Sarah Irby of Spartanburg, South Carolina on July 21, 1936. She was the 2nd oldest of 9 children. At an early age Evelyn accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and baptized into the fellowship of Macedonia Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend W.L.Wilson. She attended Spartanburg County Public Schools and graduated from Carver High School. She migrated northward first to New York, then Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There she met and married the late Robert A. Shoemake. Evelyn joined the Shiloh Baptist Church in 1963 under the watch and care of WHR Powell and remained an active member under the pastorate of Reverend Edward Sparkman where she served faithfully until her passing. She served in many capacities: Nurses Unit - President, Melinka Missionary Society - Assistant Chaplain, the Chorlus Singing Unit - Soloist, WHR Powell Flower Guild - Chaplain. She enjoyed serving her church, cooking and entertaining her family. She was well loved by her family and was lovingly called Auntie Evelyn.
Evelyn was gainfully employed as a licensed practical nurse for 28 years until she retired. She was also active in her neighborhood as chairperson of the Block Captain. Evelyn never missed an opportunity to talk to others about God, His Word and His Goodness. She tried to live by always greeting everyone with a kiss.
She leaves to cherish fond memories: 1 grandson, John Anthony; 2 great-grandsons; 3 god-children, Crystal, Arthur and Corey; 2 sisters, Jennie (Walter)Fields and Alice(Randy)Williams and a host of nieces and nephews.
There will be a viewing Monday, April 23, 2012 10:00 AM at Shiloh Baptist Church located at 2040 Christian Street. The funeral service will start at 11:00 AM. Final resting place to conclude at Mt. Peace Cemetery.
