Obituary for Evelyn L. Phillips
After fighting a long courageous battle with two rare cancers, our beloved Mother is finally able to rest. Evelyn Lee Phillips, departed this life on December 27th 2014. Evelyn was born on April 11th 1925, being the second child born to Earl Dorsey and Lessie Lyons. Evelyn, affectionately known as,” Billy” had a strong dedication to family and friends. She was a widely known member of her community. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Evelyn was educated in the Philadelphia public school system, finishing at South Philadelphia High. After high school, Billy worked at several prestigious photo developers as an expert photo finisher. Her passion for photo developing would lead her to the love of her life. Once, as she checked photos, she admired the man who would later become her husband. Albert B. Phillips and Evelyn L. Dorsey married on May 14th, 1949. Three children came from this 54 year union, Albert Jr., who preceded her in death, Madeline and Ethel. Evelyn accepted Christ at an early age and attended several churches in South Philadelphia. When the Phillips family moved to West Philadelphia Evelyn found her spiritual home at Calvin Presbyterian Church on December 17th 1972. As an active member, she helped extensively in community programs such as The Care Closet and Vacation Bible School. She also served on the Board of Trustees. She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters; Madeline and Ethel, 4 grandchildren; Jason, Jessica (Afu), Aliyah and Quincy; 2 great-granddaughters, Giselle and Zaria as well has her sister Mildred, niece Janet and brother Wesley.
