Obituary for Evelyn Lipscomb Long
Evelyn Lipscomb Long was born May 3, 1931 in South Boston, Virginia and was the 3rd child of 7 children born to William and Gladys Pounds Lipscomb. She entered into eternal rest on April 11, 2012 after a lengthy illness with complications following surgery.
Evelyn accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and became a member of News Ferry 1st Baptist Church in South Boston, Virginia.
Following her graduation from high school, she received her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Virginia State College and her Masters of Education degree in Advanced Study in Special Education from Penn State University. Evelyn spent her teaching career in the School District of Philadelphia and retired from the position of Department Head of Special Education at Northeast High School in 1993.
Evelyn married her husband James (Jimmy) Long on May 22, 1955 and they made their home in the greater Philadelphia area. After their marriage, Evelyn joined her husband as a member of Vine Memorial Baptist Church but later transferred her membership to Grace Baptist Church. Their last years were spent together in Wyncote, PA. They were a loving couple who enjoyed the comfort and beauty they created in their home. Family and friends enjoyed their warm and gracious hospitality when visiting with them Evelyn lived a blessed and joyous life filled with many activities related to her family and career.
In her later years, Evelyn endured her illness with stamina and courage. When the end was near, she peacefully surrendered her earthly journey to begin her journey through eternity.
Evelyn was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, James, William, Jr., Robert and Malcolm Lipscomb. She is survived by a devoted husband James H. Long; sisters Alice Lipscomb Jernigan and Lillie Lipscomb Taylor of Richmond, VA; sisters-in-law Melba Carr Lipscomb of South Boston, VA, Margie Long Mallory and Carolyn Wakefield Long of Bowling Green, Ky; brother-in-law Rev. Dr. John E. Long of Bowling Green, KY; godson Stephen B. Taylor of Lewes, DE; goddaughters JoAnn Green Badger and Debra Holmes Johnson; a host of of devoted nieces and nephews and many other loving cousins and friends.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 10:00 AM at Vine Memorial Baptist Church - 5600 West Girard Avenue in Philadelphia, PA. The funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 AM. Final resting place to conclude at White Marsh Memorial Park in Ambler, PA.
