Her Journey Through Life
Evelyn Perlitha Walker entered eternal rest on October 30, 2015. Born August 4, 1919, in Andrews, South Carolina, she was the fourth of ten children born to the late James and Lydia Walker. Evelyn attended public school in Andrews. In the 1940’s, Evelyn joined St. Matthews A.M.E. Church where she served as trustee, missionary, and class leader for over twenty-five years. On November 26, 2000, she received a certificate of appreciation from the church with the designation “Trustee Emeritus.” Evelyn loved her church; due to her leadership skills and the ability to “get the job done,” she was affectionately given the name “Sarge.” For over fifty years, Evelyn worked as a “domestic engineer”, raising not only her own children during those years, but also the children of the many families for whom she cared for. Evelyn loved traveling and meeting people; she loved to cook and be around her family. She often quoted, “You have to love people to have a good life with longevity.” Evelyn leaves to cherish her memory one son, James Edward Fillmore, Sr. (Barbara Fillmore) of Richmond, Virginia and one daughter, Mrs. Alice Alexander of Richmond, VA; three grandchildren, Mrs. Charlene Taylor (Billy), James Fillmore, Jr. and Ms. Melody Fillmore, along with eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Florence Thompson of Richmond, Virginia, and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Viola Walker of Richmond, Virginia; a devoted nephew, Mr. William Johnson of Philadelphia and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, specifically, devoted friends, Mrs. Dale Friedman and her family Mrs. Vivian Claxton and Mrs. Fannie Campbell. Two devoted neighbors, Mrs. Minerva Brown and Ms. Betty Warsaw.
