Life Story
Flossie Celestine Allen, the daughter of the late Mary and Henry Allen, was born in Philadelphia, PA on October 23, 1932. She departed this life on May 10, 2021. Mary and Henry Allen had three children. They were Flossie, the youngest, the late Henry Clifton Allen Jr., the oldest, and the late Eugene Alonzo Allen. Flossie received her education in the schools of Philadelphia and she graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls. At the higher education level, Flossie received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Cheyney University, and a Masters of Education Degree from Temple University. She was a founding member of Delta Iota Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Flossie was employed by the School District of Philadelphia for 30 years serving as a classroom teacher and serving in the following Mid- Management positions: EIP Consultant, EIP Chief Consultant, and the Follow Through District Five Liaison. Other professional responsibilities included serving as the Chair of the Board of Directors of Simpson House, Inc., the Chair of the Board of Directors of Simpson Mid-Town and Educational Consultant for the Southwest Educational Laboratory in Austin Texas.
Flossie accepted Christ at a very early age and she was baptized at St. Matthews AME Church. She found joy in her personal relationship with Christ. Throughout her life the passage of scripture that guided her Christian journey was, “In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:6. In 1963, Flossie became a member of Janes Memorial United Methodist Church. The Reverend Dr. Henry H. Nichols was the pastor. Flossie was blessed to have the opportunity to participate in various leadership activities for young people including Church School Teacher, Coordinator for Children’s Ministries, assistant drama coach for the Janes Drama Guild, and Assistant Director of Christian Education. Her life was also enriched by having the opportunity to serve in Administrative and Service programs with adults which included Lay Leader, secretary of Church Council, Coordinator for the Janes Computer Program, Co-Coordinator for the Shepherd’s Program, Chair of the Senior Adult Ministry, Chair of Membership Ministry, and member of the United Methodist Women, the Soup Kitchen Staff, the Janes Sanctuary Ensemble, the Family Circle, the Adult Sunday School Class, the Board of Trustees and the Finance Ministry.
Flossie enjoyed politics. Her personal library is filled with biographies of politicians and various political science books. Flossie was always anxious to have a discussion with someone about current events. Flossie also enjoyed watching football and baseball on television. She was always talking about the events occurring on her favorite teams, the Eagles and the Phillies.
Although Flossie did not give birth to her own children, she was extremely blessed to have a very close relationship with her nieces and nephews. She played an instrumental role in the spiritual lives of her nieces as she took the time to pick them up and take them to Sunday school every week. Initially she influenced them to attend church but they were impacted more by watching her provide leadership for various programs in the church. They often observed her as she spent many hours preparing instructional materials for the Sunday School programs such as the Black History Month Programs and the Christmas and Easter Sunday School Programs. Her dedication to the Lord and her discipleship has left a legacy that can be seen in the next generation of her family. Her excellence and value of education also influenced her family to pursue their goals.
