Her Journey
AUGUST 16, 1928 – MARCH 12, 2016

Peaceably on March 12, 2016, Gloria Josephine Smith Hubert, departed this life at Lankenau Medical Center and transitioned to her Heavenly Home to be with the Lord.

Gloria, was the only child of the late Nathanial and Mattie Hall Smith, born August 16, 1928 in Ashville, North Carolina where she was baptized as a young girl.

She received her early education in Scotland County, North Carolina and later went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Fayetteville State Teachers College, now know as Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, North Carolina.  Shortly after she began her career in education, she met and married James Hubert, Sr. From this union, six children were born, three girls and three boys; one daughter, Felicia, preceded her in death.

In 1955, Gloria and James relocated their family to Philadelphia, PA.  She united with Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, under the late Rev. Dr. Connie L. McDaniel where she was a loyal member for more than Fifty years. She would see to it that her children were introduced, baptized and raised in Christian discipleship. She was an educator in the School District of Philadelphia for more than forty years, retiring in 1991.

A devoted wife, consummate mother, grandmother and great grandmother “Jo” and “Maw” as she was affectionately called, loved cooking and preparing meals for family gatherings and friends.  Her home was always open and a gathering place for her children and grandchildren to celebrate family events and milestones.  While in her presence, you were bound to receive some ‘insightful wisdom’ and she often went out of her way to show everyone around her what it truly means to love unconditionally.  She was a true nurturer to both the young and the not so young. Her children can certainly attest that she lived and allowed her light to shine setting an example for others.

Gloria leaves to cherish precious memories: two loving daughters, Gloria Renee’ (Warren), Deborah (Dave); three adoring sons, James, Jr. (Valerie), Mark and Dillard; one sister-in-law, Patricia Arroya; one brother-in-law, Curtis; five grandchildren, Karriem, Husniyah, Tia, Yasmine and Tonoya; great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
