Gwendolyn Patricia Carroll, devoted sister, mother, grandmother and aunt, departed this life on Monday, June 19, 2023, at Lankenau Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Gwendolyn or Gwen as she was affectionately known to her family and close friends was born to the late Reverend Joseph W. Carroll, Sr. and Eleanor M. (Howell) Carroll on January 1, 1938, in Kilmarnock, Virginia. In addition to
Gwendolyn, who was the second oldest child, this union was blessed with five other children-the late Sylvia Y., Jacqueline E., and Joan E., and surviving children, Cynthia A. and Joseph W. Carroll, Jr.
Gwendolyn received her early education in the public school systems of Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland. She vigorously pursued academic excellence and mastery of her chosen vocation at every level of her educational experience. In June 1955, she graduated with honors from Baltimore City’s Frederick Douglass High School; and in June 1960, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and Appreciation from Morgan State University (formerly Morgan State College). Additionally, she later pursued postgraduate studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Gwendolyn joined Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church in Churchville, Maryland as a young child. She assumed an active role and participated in numerous churches, civic, community and educational organizations throughout both her adolescent and adult life.
During her career as an educator, Gwendolyn was employed as a teacher with the Pennsylvania Public School System of Philadelphia. She worked with the Board of Education for over forty-five years.
Gwendolyn leaves to cherish her memory; a son, Daved M. A. Richardson, Sr.; grandsons, Jamar and Jarod Scott and Dave’d M.A. Richardson, Jr.,; granddaughters, Nina Rios, Cherelle M. and Daviah Richardson; devoted and loving brother, Joseph W. Carroll, Jr.; sister, Cynthia A. Carroll; niece, Nicolle A. C. Haysbert-Williams; nephews, Philip J., Michael J. and Christopher J. Palmer; great-niece, Lauren N. Haysbert; great nephews, Tyre Q., Tyler J., and Shane B. Williams; godchild, Phyllis C. Ray; a host of other loving relatives and friends.
Lovingly submitted,
The Family
