Life Story
James Duncan Biggs, Sr. was born on March 5, 1926 near North Carolina territory to the late
Martha Biggs Gilchrist Walker. He departed this life on February 4, 2021, a nonagenarian, 94
years of age. Sadly, he fell to dehydration and general deterioration, the most noted cause of
death for those who struggle with dementia.
James’ early formal education took place in the schools of the North Carolina education system. After high school, he was accepted to North Carolina AT&T. However, his plans for college were truncated as he took leave to assume the responsibility of running the family farm upon the failing health of his grandmother.
In December 1951, James united in marriage to the late Mary Jeannette Biggs. To this union five children were born, four sons and one daughter.
In 1952, James voluntarily enlisted in the United States Army. After his years of military service,
James and his beloved wife, Mary, uprooted their young family and relocated to Philadelphia
territory. It wasn’t long before James found gainful employment at two local hospitals where he
was a dedicated worker until his retirement.
James was a devout member of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church, located at 5732 Race Street near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania territory 19139, where he served as the only male nurse. He enjoyed his service as a member of the male ushers as well.
James Duncan Biggs, Sr. has transitioned after a long, industrious life, leaving in his wake hearts heavy laden in sorrow and grief. Blessed consolation comes in knowing he is finally at peace, freed from all suffering, pain and mental anguish. His spirit now belongs to the ages until that glorious day when we all meet again in paradise.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, James Biggs, Jr., noted and gifted artist/illustrator;
Dr. Cynthia Biggs El, former university professor, former teacher of secondary English (School
District of Philadelphia), author and veteran songwriter of The Sound of Philadelphia musical
legacy; Terrence Biggs, community activist, percussionist, and retired applications programmer (Department of Veteran Affairs); Xavier Biggs, celebrity boxing and personal fitness trainer and Director of Boxing for the International 9Round 30 Minute Kickbox Fitness Clubs; and Tyrell Biggs, three-time world amateur boxing champion and 1984 Super Heavyweight Boxing Olympic Gold Medalist (XXIII Olympiad); one sister, Maxine D. McKoy and husband Samuel Lee McKoy of Indiana; two grandsons: Tyrell Charles and Xavier Malik; one granddaughter, LaTasha; three great grandchildren, Arianna, Samarg and Nyla, and a host of extended family
and friends.
Lovingly,
The Family
