Life Story
Janet Cooper-Williams departed this life on June 23, 2016 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the age of 64. She died after a lengthy illness. She leaves behind her husband, Theodore Williams; and her daughter, Danielle Cooper-Williams.
Janet was born September 30, 1951 in Philadelphia, to father Willie Cooper and mother Ina Cooper, who preceded her in death. She grew up in a loving, close-knit family with one sister, Joyce, and one brother, John. Janet was educated in the Philadelphia School System, where she attended Henry C. Lea Elementary School and John Bartram High School. She later graduated from St. Joseph's University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Relations.
Janet married Theodore Williams on May 9, 1973. From that union was born one daughter, Danielle, in 1986. Janet was a devoted wife and mother, who regularly expressed great pride and boundless love for her daughter. During Danielle’s childhood, Janet served as president and held other officer positions in the Delaware Valley Chapter of Twigs, Incorporated. Janet also served as an excellent party hostess, known for opening her home to friends and family on New Year’s Eve for The Williams’ annual celebration - an event highlighted by her warmth, side-splitting jokes and signature “wrinkled steaks.”
Janet was an exceptionally driven professional with a love of dancing, crime dramas and word puzzles. When diagnosed with cancer in 2013, she remained dedicated to her work as Benefits Director at Resources For Human Development, even as she fought illness. Full of sass and never fearful of candor, Janet remained a quick-witted, iron-willed woman throughout her final months.
Janet is survived by her husband and daughter, as well as her sister, Joyce Cooper; and her brother, John Cooper. Throughout her career she collected numerous “work-sons” and “work-daughters,” who affectionately called her Mom or Mama J, as they sought her wise counsel. As well, Janet leaves a close circle of friends and neighborsto cherish her memory.
Janet requested to be cremated. A memorial will be held at McCall Country Club and Golf course; all are welcome. The family would especially like to thank Dr. Charles Dunton, Janet's oncologist, for his excellent work and frank, but caring disposition; the staff of Lankenau Hospital for their constant, loving treatment; the staff of Saunders House for their attentive care in her final days; and the Wood Funeral Home, for making the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society in memory of Janet Cooper-Williams.
