Julie Bogerty Life Story

"0 give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good.' for his mercy endured forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so ". Psalm 107:1 and 2a

Since the early years of the Vine Street Baptist Church, Julia Lee Langston Bogerty has served as an example of Christian commitment, compassion, consistency in service and devotion ..first as a child, then as a youth, and now as an adult.

The daughter of James and Alma Curry Langston, Julia attended the public schools of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from grades K through 12. She studied piano with private teachers at home, as well as studied piano and theory at the Settlement Music School, and the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music. Additionally, Julia studied organ under Charles Robert Jones.

It was on the 4th Sunday in August, 1945 that Julia accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She was baptized, fellowshipped, and received her first Communion on the 2ndd Sunday in September of that year. Yet, even before that decision for Christ, Julia's roots were planted in Vine Memorial (and Vine Street) Baptist Church. Her parents had united with the church in 1942 under the pastorate of the late Reverend Leonard G. Carr, and like the good Christian parents they were, they immediately enrolled Julia in Sunday school and B.Y.P.D. Says Julia of her parents, "They were a great influence in my life. When I earned praise, I was praised. When I needed discipline, I was disciplined. My father escorted me to Sunday school and BYPU He instilled in me a zeal for service, encouraging me to be prompt and dependable. My mother was the best "Mom" in the world; she taught me by being a good example. Her constant words to me were 'always be a lady'. I was further encouraged by my family, Godparents, church family, friends and neighbors. In my youth, it was believed that 'it takes a village to raise a child' ".

When the church relocated to Girard Avenue, young Julia was, of course there with her parents. Fondly, she remembers,” I marched with my mom and Gospel Chorus to our present location”. After joining Vine, Julia joined the Young People's Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Lila Davis. As she aged, she moved up to the Young Adult and Senior (now Sanctuary) Choirs.

In the 1940's, Julia served as pianist for the Beginners Department of the Sunday school and assisted the teachers. She served as pianist for the B.Y.P.D. until the mid 1960's. During the fifties, she was not only teacher and pianist for the Primary Department, but also directed the Children's Choir, and later the Young People's Choir. To the children and youth, she became "Miss Julia" and she served joyously and faithfully until the mid 1960's.

Julia was united in marriage to Charles Bogerty on June 7, 1969. She reflects, "1 gained 8 sisters, 2 brothers, nieces and nephews".

Through the years, Julia Lee Langston Bogerty has served in almost every imaginable capacity. Currently, her membership affiliations include the Deaconess Ministry, the Sanctuary Choir, and Missionary Circle #7. She has blessed our church immeasurably through her service, her giving, her faithfulness, and her love. And all of her actions are simply an outgrowth of a beautiful attitude, as reflected in the following quotation from Julia:

"1 love the Lord, because He accepts us as we are, and gives us the opportunity to serve in his vineyard. All praise be to God; for He is worthy of our praise ".
