LIFE STORY
The Obituary
LaFronia Dunbar Childs, known to everyone as “Fronie”, was born to the late William M. Dunbar and Julia A. Rhodes Dunbar, on April 14, 1919 in Barnwell County, South Carolina. There were five siblings: Mattie L. Dunbar Johnson (D), Joncier A. Scott (D), Eunice D. Jenkins (D), William O. Dunbar (D), and Lorraine Jean Mathews, Mesa, Arizona.
The family moved to Philadelphia when Fronie was a young child. She was educated in the Philadelphia public school system and attended William Penn High School.
In 1942, Fronie married George Alexander Childs (D) and from this union, one daughter was born. After moving to West Philadelphia, Fronie became a member of Vine Memorial Baptist Church, where she faithfully served on the Usher Board.
Fronie defined independence. She worked at John Wanamakers Department Store for over 40 years and worked her way up to be a floor manager. During her working years, Fronie enjoyed visiting with her daughter and her family and spoiling her two granddaughters. But retirement did not slow her down. She enjoyed taking bus rides to Atlantic City to play the slots, playing cards with friends, listening to country music, watching Judges Judy, Joe Brown and Mathis and teaching her granddaughters how to cook over the phone.
In November 2004, Fronie suffered a stroke, which eventually led her to lose the function of her legs. But Fronie’s independence and pure stubbornness, allowed her to continue to live life on her own. She would participate in adult day care at Inglis House and even learned how to use email at the age of 90.
Fronie enjoyed visits from her great grandson. They had their own special bond where they would read together, eat ice cream and watch movies together in “her chair.” In his words, “She was the best Great Grandmom.”
On Thursday, June 9, 2016, Fronie was called home to be with the Lord. She leaves the following to cherish priceless memories: a daughter, Gwendolyn C. Slaton, granddaughters Kimberly D. Slaton and Leigh Slaton Mumford, great grandson L.J. Hines, son-in-law Harrison A. Slaton, grandson-in-law Kevin M. Mumford, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Fronie will be missed. We thank God for lending her to us and letting her be a part of our lives.
