Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Leonard Poindexter, entered into eternal rest on July 23, 2024. Leonard was the second oldest son born on March 12, 1927 to Mabel and Charles Poindexter of South Philadelphia. One of 8 kids, Leonard was very protective of his siblings. He would always be there to stick up for them if any of them needed him. As a child he attended Stanton Elementary school where he wasn't very athletic but enjoyed school yard banter with his classmates. From there he would attend Barrett Junior High and eventually graduated from Ben Franklin High School. Leonard enlisted into the U.S. Navy in 1944 at the age of 17, entering in as First Class Seaman. His time in the Navy allowed him to land in many places starting with Great Lakes, Illinois on the USNTS vessel, then the USN TADCEN vessel in Shoemaker, CA and eventually ended his tour in the Phillipines where he rec'd the Phillipines Liberation Ribbon. Some of his other awards were the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. In 1946, Leonard returned to Philadelphia landing a job at Broad Motors where he worked as a under coater for 29 years. Leonard loved the mechanics of a car. He knew all of the in and outs and could take a car a part and put it back together blindfolded. Once the company closed, Leonard ended up at Budget Rent a Car where he became a fleet manager in their Center City location. Leonard was a great leader who understood the value of hard work and who always instilled in his team great work ethic. Being consistent in his dealings with others and while having a strong sense of responsibility his job performance was bar none. Leonard retired after 25 years and decided to enjoy his retirement becoming Poppi the baby sitter to his grandkids and great grandkids. He loved being a grandfather and great grandfather. It brought him many years of smiles, laughter and joy. Leonard was truly a man's man who did not try to impress anyone but lived in his truth! He had a great sense of style, he loved to shop for a nice suit and shoes at Boyd's, Morville's or Diamond's. He enjoyed jazz, he enjoyed a good comedy show, playing Solitaire or just kicking back at home reading the Bulletin or Inquirer from cover to cover. In recent years, Leonard enjoyed family gatherings at his home to celebrate milestones like birthdays, graduations and the Christmas holiday! He had a great sense of humor and loved to tell a few jokes that would keep those around him in stitches. We will miss our beloved patriarch for the lessons he passed down through generations, the promises he fulfilled and memories he left behind. He loved with everything in him and we loved all of him. Leonard leaves to cherish his wife of 55 years, Pat, three children, Dina, Ronald and Stacey, his son Robert preceded him in death, 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. A host of other relatives and friends.
