Obituary for Leontine D. Scott
We Lovingly Remember
Leontine Dillon Scott was born in Mt. Holly, NJ on April 14, 1928 to the late George and Grace Dillon. Following the death of her mother, she was raised by her aunt, Esther Dillon Vargus.
She attended schools in Mt. Holly, NJ and after graduating with a degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Temple University, she was appointed as a teacher at the McCall School in the School District of Philadelphia. She also completed further graduate work at Temple University. her exemplary career, from 1948-1993, included serving as the Administrator and later the Director of the Follow Through Program. Following a successful tenure in these positions, she was appointed Associate Superintendent, Office of Instruction, and later Associate Superintendent for School Operations. In addition to these responsibilities, she served as a key member of teams negotiating school district union contracts. Leontine served as the architect of the school district and university collaborative effort to improve education.
The African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas was dear to her heart, and she served for many years as the Accounting Warden and on the Vestry. She was a member of the Sisterhood Guild and an inaugural member of the Board of Directors of the Absolom Jones Day School.
Leontine served on the Boards of The Lincoln Day Educational Center and the Please Touch Museum.
She was a member of The Carats, The Carousels, The Links Incorporated (Bucks County Chapter), Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated (Omega Omega Chapter), and The Black Womens Educational Alliance (Charter Member).
Through the years she exhibited a strong interest in art, proudly discussing and displaying the award winning paintings of her grandfather, Frank Dillon. Her leisure time was often filled with afternoons of bridge.
She leaves to cherish her memory, one son, Daniel Leigh Scott (Denise); 2 granddaughters, Alexis Payne Scott and Brooke K. Davis (William); 1 great-grandson, William Isaiah Davis; 1 brother, George Dillon; 1 sister, Marilyn Dillon Hunt; 2 goddaughters, Wanda Wood Morse and Nancy Pope Dozier; 1 brother-in-law; 2 sisters-in-law; 2 nephews; 4 nieces and a host of friends and admirers.
There will be a viewing on Tuesday, August 30th from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at The African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas located at 6361 Lancaster Avenue in Philadelphia, PA. The various organizations that she was a part of will have presentations during this time. A requiem mass will start at 11:00 AM. Her final resting place will be at Rolling Green Memorial Park in West Chester, PA.
