Obituary for Lynn Douglas Harrell, Sr.
Lynn Douglas Harrell, Sr. was born on January 18, 1930 in Edenton North Carolina, to Joseph
Harrell and Emma Johnson Harrell. He was the youngest of ten children born to the blended family of
Joseph and Emma and the only child they had together.
The first time Lynn had a connection with Vine Memorial Baptist Church he made posters for the
upcoming Revival at his church in Edenton, the Providence Baptist Church. Reverend Leonard George Carr
was the guest preacher for that Revival.
Lynn was active in sports during his education in the Edenton Public School System. He had many
talents, art and sports being two of those talents. Lynn wore the number ten jersey as the Quarterback
for Edenton High now (D.F. Walker High School), the only High School for Blacks in town. He often
recalled that one of the most important moments of his time playing football was seeing his Father in the
stands after a game.
It was about this time that Lynn met Anne Johnson. She liked to ride Lynn’s bike, and one day fell
from it and broke her ankle. Lynn visited her every day.
Lynn and Anne were married in Edenton in 1948 and remained together for more than seventy
three years. Three children were born to Lynn and Anne’s union, Pamela, Joyce and Lynn Jr. Lynn was
also known to others as Pop-Pop, Grandpa, or Great Pa-Pa. Lynn loved his family and would do whatever
he could to help them.
Lynn and Anne moved to Philadelphia in the early 1950’s where they discovered Vine Memorial
Baptist Church was just up the street from where they were living. Lynn joined Vine and was baptized by
Reverend Carr, the church’s founding Pastor. Always active in church, Lynn served on the following
ministries: President of the Senior Usher Board; original member of the Vine Memorial Credit Union; as
well as a member of the Vine Memorial Baptist Church Male Chorus.
Lynn was employed by the Container Corporation of America in Manayunk, Pa. and he retired
after forty one years, where he rose to the level of Supervisor.
After retirement Lynn chose hobbies that were of interest to him such as, photography,
landscaping, cooking and golf.
He was survived by his wife, Anne J. Harrell, three children, Pamela Jo Byrd (Marvin), Joyce Ann
Harrell, and Lynn Douglas Harrell, Jr.; four Grandchildren, Richard K. Harrell, Angela A. Byrd, M. Ronald
Byrd, Jr. (Michelle) and Aja M. Harrell; four Great Grandchildren, Tylan Thornton, Nyla G. Harrell, Dominic
Byrd and Jordan Byrd; two Great-Great Grandchildren, Noah Martinez-Harrell and Roman Martinez-
Harrell; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
