Obituary for Margaretta E. Jones
Margaretta Elizabeth Jones was born on July 29, 1924, in Philadelphia, PA to the late Thomas and Margaretta Slowe. her older sister was the late Mildred Stevens, the mother of her niece, Larein Robinson. Margaretta and Larein grew up closely together like sisters.She attended Philadelphia Public Schools and graduated from the South Philadelphia High School for Girls. She later furthered her education by completing and Associate Degree in Business Administration.Margaretta worked at the Wanamaker Department Store as an Assistant Buyer. She left there to take a position at the Philadelphia Tribune. Her last position before retiring was at the West Philadelphia Mental Health Consortium as an Administrative Assistant.Since childhood she was a member of St. Simon Cyrenian Episcopal Church in South Philadelphia. She was christened, confirmed and later married there on November 29, 1975 to the late Lewis Jones. She was a member of the Junior Choir, Senior Choir and Girls Friendly Society. In 2002, she joined the Zion Baptist Church in North Philadelphia where she worked as a volunteer in the church's Credit Union until her health failed.For the past 17 years of her life, she lived at the Riverside Presbyterian Apartments for seniors in Center City Philadelphia. She was the President on the Council for many years, planning trips and events and was also active on various committees. She had numerous friends and was well thought of by all the residents.Margaretta was an affectionate and outgoing person. She made friends easily and enjoyed helping others. She was an avid bowler and world traveler in her day. She also loved to sing and dance. Above all else, the activity she enjoyed the most was being with her family. She loved everyone unconditionally and always had a smile on her face. She was the peacekeeper; the counselor when no one else would listen; and she made everyone feel appreciated and good about themselves.She leaves behind in loving memory her niece, Larein Robinson; great-nephews, Robert, Bernard, Derrick and Darryl Robinson; great-great nieces and nephews, Robert Robinson, III, Melisa Johnson, Nikki Karnes, Krista Seiden, Bernard Robinson, Jr., Anisah and Kelsey Robinson and Maya Crandall; great-great-great nieces and nephews, Brandon and Lauren Johnson, Kendall and Jackson Karnes, Sonny Robinson, Amina Seiden and Nehemiah Colston; nieces-in-law, Lois Robinson and Barbara Robinson plus a host of other family members and friends.
There will be a viewing Friday, March 2, 2012 9:00 AM at Zion Baptist Church - 3600 North Broad Street. The funeral service will start at 11:00 AM. Final resting place to conclude privately.
