Obituary for Melvin R. Miller
Melvin R. Miller was born on January 24, 1940 to the late Jacqueline Lanier and late Melvin Rufus Miller, Sr. in Philadelphia, PA. He journeyed home to the Lord on May 14, 2012.
Melvin was educated at Overbrook High School in Philadelphia and went on to become a Master Carpenter and Builder. He loved his work and was meticulous in all that he did, laboring for over 60 years, all the way up until March 2012. he was a determined servant and provider. He served in the Army for 2 years and in the Reserves for 8 years.
Melvin was a member of St. Matthews Baptist Church for over 20 years and actively served in the kitchen, security and Congregational Care ministries. He was one of the 1st mentors in the SMBC Young Men's Mentoring ministry(Project Manhood), and was anointed Deacon in 1999. And though he was known as a quiet Deacon, he beamed when he taught the youth about carpentry or the "Ms. Fix-It" classes.
He also beamed when he met his wife, Barbara, on a cruise in 1999, where he used the Bible love chapter of I Cornithians 13 to witness, test and inspire her. They married July 14, 2001 and stayed on their "honeymoon" until the Lord called him home.
He was the oldest male child of 10 children and was preceded by his sisters, Ruth Evans, Gwendolyn Ezekiel and brothers John and Eugene Miller.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara(Billups)Miller; his blended family of children, Derrick,Tracey, Dwight, Christina, Lauren and Jonathan; his siblings, Mildred, Ronald, William, Jackie and Richard; 10 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
There will be a viewing on Friday, May 25, 2012 9:00 AM at St. Matthews Baptist Church - 245 Glassboro Road Williamstown, NJ 08094. Funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM. Interment to conclude privately.
