Othelia Jackson was born on April 24, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA. She was the second of five children born to William Amos and Marie (Nichols) Jackson. Othelia was reared in a Christian home with her siblings: Dolores, Leon, Elsie and Florence.

At an early age, Othelia attended Zion AME Church in South Philadelphia, with her family, until she and her siblings joined Calvary A.M.E. church. She attended church school and became a member of the choir. Othelia was a faithful church attendee throughout her life.
