The Life Story
Randolph Mumford, known to everyone as “Randy,” was born to Clifton Berry
and Teola Mumford on August 10, 1935 in Snow Hill, Maryland. Randy was an only
child. Clifton and Teola were teenagers. With Teola just 16, and unable to care for
Randy, he was sent off to live with various relatives, bouncing from home to home, until
eventually landing in a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania orphanage. Randy spent the next
few years there until adopted by his Aunt Francis of Philadelphia.
Randy remained in Philadelphia, and was able to complete a few years of school.
In 1957, Randy enlisted in the United States Army where he served as a Private and
was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1959. Later
that year, he married Barbara Nelson. The couple moved in with Barbara's parents,
William and Margaret, for four years. During this time, Randy faithfully saved up enough
money to purchase a home in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania in 1963. He attended night
school and was able to earn his high school equivalency diploma. Before this union
dissolved, two sons were born, Kevin and Tony.
After serving in the Army, Randy began his career at the United States Post
Office. He faithfully worked for the United States Post Office for 50 years, rising to the
level of Supervisor of Maintenance Operations.
Randy was a private man. However, he was very committed to his family,
especially his grandchildren. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his life partner,
going to the casino, playing cards with his friends and he had an affinity for Cadillac
cars. Randy was a fountain of wisdom and in his own special way he passed on his
nuggets of intellect to those in his inner circle.
On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Randy was called home to be with the Lord. He
leaves to honor his life and cherish priceless memories: sons, Kevin Marc Mumford
(Leigh) and Anthony Vincent Mumford (Joyce), granddaughters, Elena Mumford and
Lauren Mumford, grandson, L.J. Hines, life partner, Judi Hill, and a host of cousins,
extended family, and friends.
