Obituary for Robert A Sheppard
ROBERT SHEPPARD entered this world on November 30, 1938 in Limestone County, Athens, Alabama. He was the son of Nina Davis and Roland Sheppard. He was one of two children, one of whom preceded his death, Roland Carl Sheppard. Robert was educated in the Philadelphia school system. He attended and graduated from West Philadelphia High School. He was a member of Vine Memorial Baptist Church joining under the late Reverend Carr and Reverend James S. Allen. In his later years, he was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Pierce, Florida, where he was a Deacon. Robert was united in marriage to Joyce Brooks Hopkins. This union produced two children, Nianne Sheppard and Alfred Carl Sheppard. Robert Sheppard later was wed to Linda Ann Fuller. This union produced one child, Robert Anwar Sheppard. After high school, Robert was accepted into Cheyney University but decided to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He spent these years in Paris, France where he developed a love for everything French. Robert became a Mason on December 7, 1975. His Shriners fez remains one of his most cherished belongings. Robert worked for the Philadelphia School Board for many years. He started as a fireman, becoming an expert in his field. He retired from the school board as district manager of facilities. Upon retirement from the Philadelphia School Board he relocated to Florida taking his mother, Nina and father, Roland with him. Robert couldn’t stay retired for long so he started working for the St. Lucie Public School System doing the work that he loved. Robert was an avid gardener, artist, carpenter, driver and reader of the Bible. He loved to create; whether it was growing a beautiful Jersey tomato, designing a table using nothing but champagne bottles or building a bi-level patio deck. Simply put, he was at peace when he used his God given talents to create something amazing for the people he loved the most. He also came alive behind the wheel. He worked for both Merz and Trailways bus companies for many years. Many Philadelphians enjoyed trips to Lancaster with him at the wheel guiding them through the countryside. He was a historian, that educated all who could hear about the exciting new destination that awaits ahead. He expertly found verses in the Bible and knew how to apply them to the real life situation at hand. He loved making people happy. He enjoyed hosting summer swim parties and cooking for his church family. His generous nature and gregarious spirit will be missed. Robert leaves behind to cherish precious memories: two children, Nianne and Robert; one son-in-law, Vincent; three grandchildren, Isaiah, Sarah and Alicia; and one great-granddaughter, A’marie; one childhood friend Tom Porter, Cousin Valerie Walton, Sister in God Mary Sparks and a host of friends and family from coast to coast.
