Obituary for Ruth A. Darling
In Loving Memory
Ruth A. Darling entered into this world on May 20, 1920 in Sumpter, South Carolina to the late Josiah Bethune and Sarah Singleton. She was the last of 9 children (5 sisters and 3 brothers) all whom have preceded her in death. She peacefully departed this life on Friday, October 28, 2011.
Being raised in a Christian home, Ruth was christened at St. Mark's Methodist Episcopal Church in Sumter, SC where she was active in the Sunday School and Church. She attended grammar school at Kendall Institute and High School at Morris College both in Sumter, SC. She attended Claffin College in Orangeburg, SC.
She was married to Dennis Darling, Jr. on November 20, 1946 in Philadelphia, PA by the late Rev. C.M. Smith of the Wayland Temple Baptist Church.
Ruth was employed by Temple University for 32 years in the Service Department.
She joined Mt. Zion UMC under the pastorate of Rev. C.W. Derickson. It was there that she was honored by the finance committee in 1983. She served as Chairperson of the Finance Committee from 1971-1983. She was a member of the Trustee Aides and served as Secretary until 1996. It was then she was elected to the Board of Trustees and served 2 terms. She loved her Zion family and missed worshipping with them during her illness. She loved to hear the Men's Chorus sing and listening to Rev. Johnson preach the Word.
Ruth liked to watch sports and her favorite team was the 76ers, even when they were playing horribly!
Cherished memories will forever remain in the heart of her husband of 65 years, Dennis; 2 nephews Clarence Holmes of Garfield, NJ and Frank Bethune of Charleston, SC; 1 great-niece Ruby Isaac Davis of Bishopville, SC; 1 great-niece in law Annette (Alonza) whom she talked to everyday and loved to spend the holiday's with; 1 great-nephew James Edward Isaac(Barbara) of Paterson, NJ; 1 sister-in-law Hattie Robinson of St. Petersburg, FL and 1 brother-in-law Freddie Darling of Jacksonville, FL; her favorite great-nephew Randall(Ron) Isaac who always had time for his Aunt Tootsie; a longtime dear friend, Marie Brown; her angels Cressa and William Morris; neighbors Leroy and Josie Wood, Renee Grant and Delores Brown who always looked out for her and Dennis and a host of extended family members.
There will be a viewing on Saturday, November 5, 2011 9AM at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church located at 1530 North 11th Street. The funeral service will start promptly at 10AM. Final resting place to conclude at Eden Cemetery in Collingdale, Pennsylvania.
