Obituary for Steven L. Bennett, Jr.
Steven L. Bennett, Jr. was born to Steven L. Bennett, Sr and the late Mary L. Griffin-Bennett on May 30, 1960 in Philadelphia, PA.Steve, as he was affectionately known, was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System where he graduated from Martin Luther King HS. He joined the Pennsylvania National Guard in 1979 and served until 1987 where he was honorably discharged. Steven joined the Philadelphia Police Department in 1989. While within the police department, Steven served in various units including, Highway Patrol, Traffic and the Narcotics Division. Steven received several commendations and awards for merit and bravery including the Fraternal Order of Police Academy award for platoon leadership before retiring in 2010. After retiring from the police department, he was employed by Bryn Mawr College with the public safety department.Steven loved spending time with his family, especially his children and traveling. He was a practical joker that had many hobbies and enjoying being on the computer, taking pictures, having cookouts and playing with the latest gadgets. He always had his uniform pressed and shoes shined. While not in uniform, he loved to dress and always had on a new pair of the latest sneakers. Steven was always smiling and willing to help anyone in need. He was a no nonsense man.Steven was a kind, loving man and will be deeply missed.Steven departed this life on February 8, 2012 and he leaves behind his precious memory to his companion, Valerie Curry; daughter Aneea Bennett; sons Steven L. Bennett, III and Darien Bennett; father Steven L. Bennett, Sr.; brothers Kevin Bennett and Darrin Boswell; sisters Dawn and Kimberly Bennett; grandmother Hazel Griffin; aunt Marie E. Camp; cousin Dr. Dana-Marie Thomas; his extended family Anna Farr, Vance McKelvy and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
There will be a viewing on Thursday, February 16, 2012 9:00 AM at Bethel Deliverance International Church located at 2901 West Cheltenham Avenue. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM. Final resting place to conclude at Ivy Hill Cemetery.
