Obituary for Theresa Simons
The Life Story
Theresa Simons was born to the late Isiah and Julia Luton on August 26, 1933 in Powellsville, North Carolina. Theresa was the youngest of five siblings. She established her position as the baby “boss” of the family early on. Her siblings knew that they were in for an interesting and memorable experience.
Theresa accepted Christ at an early age at First Baptist Missionary Church of Powellsville, North Carolina. She received her education at Charles Grant White High School in Powellsville. Theresa received several acknowledgements, scholastic honors, and awards for above average achievements, especially in drama. She displayed an in-born talent of potentially becoming a true thespian. After leaving high school, Theresa having a curious/adventurous spirit, moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Three, she began her adult life which was filled with many happy and challenging moments.
She continued her relationship with Christ as a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As always Theresa persevered and made the best of all encountered situations. She married and was the proud mother of a son and daughter before finally attaining a career with Philadelphia’s Head Start Program. Theresa loved teaching and working with kids, and they absolutely adored her. She established her leadership talents amongst her peers including district managers and supervisory staff almost immediately. Many years after her retirement from the program, she was always recognized and respected by her students who had matured into adulthood. That was a legacy she spoke of often and remained proud of throughout her retirement years.
During her retirement, she especially enjoyed her trips to the casinos and her fortunate ability to win a few jackpots (some big, some small) before returning home. One of her treasured characteristics was that, once she became your friend, she was your friend for life.
Theresa was preceded in death by: her son, Demetrius; daughter, Angela Simons; husband, Wilbur Simons; one brother, Herman, three sisters, Mable, Christina, and Erma; and one granddaughter, Michelle.
Theresa’s buoyant laugh and personal memories will remain forever in the hearts of: her grandson, Tyron (Angelique); great-granddaughters, Quandria, Tyonah, and Treasure; one great-grandson, Tyron, Jr.; niece, Sudie Rover-Tinson (Larry); grandniece, Carolyn Rover-Jackson of California; niece, Diane and daughter of Baltimore; a host of nephews and a multitude of friends.
