History of Vincent Barkley, Sr.

Vincent was the youngest of 2 children born to the late Louis C. Barkley and Pearl E. King Barkley on November 24, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA.  He was raised by his grandparents Eunisee and George P. Jones and his aunt Iola Barkley Robinson.

At an early age, he was baptized and joined church.

Vincent was briefly educated in Philadelphia, PA at Landreth Elementary School.  In 1938, the family moved to Glassboro, NJ where he continued his education at Elsmere School and Glassboro HS graduating in 1945.  Then in September 1945, he enlisted in the Navy as a Stewardsmate 2nd class.  While serving in the Navy, Vincent's tour of duty included sailing on the USS PC-1194, USS Kearsarge (V-33) and the USS Midway (CVP-41) until discharged.  Upon his discharge in October 1948, Vincent received the WWII Victory Medal. 

Vincent later enrolled in a course for broadcasting at the Columbia School of Broadcasting.

Vincent began working for the census bureau in 1950 which marked the beginning of his civil government service.  He met and married the late Elizabeth Peterson in 1950.  Eventually they were blessed with two children, Denise Anita Barkley Livas and Vincent Barkley, Jr.

While working as a clerk with the federal government, Vincent seized an opportunity to become a US Customs Inspector from which he retired in 1988.  He continued to utilize his skills as an inspector with HOLT Corporation and was later employed by HRSI Corporation where he transponded medical records.

Vincent reestablished his fellowship with Killingsworth Temple in 1996 serving as an usher, helper and trustee while faithfully attending Sunday School.  Vincent met his present wife Dolores Laremore at church and married in February 1999.  They remained faithful until his passing.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Dolores; daughter Denise and son Vincent; son in law William; daughter in law Nedra; brother Eugene L. Barkley, Sr. (Oversia); 3 grandchildren Erica Stacy Banks(Jalyn), Andrea Tracey Bowles (Timothy) and William Craig Livas; 6 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 9:00 AM at Killingsworth Temple located at 51st and Brown Streets.  The funeral service will start at 10:00 AM.  Final resting place to conclude at Mt. Lawn Cemetery in Sharon Hill, PA.
