Vincentia M. Obeng-Williams, also known as “Vinnie” 57, of Camden NJ, passed away surrounded by loved ones on July 21, 2023, at Cooper University Hospital after a lifelong battle with Sickle Cell disease.
Vincentia was born on July 31, 1965, in Osu Accra, Ghana. She was the firstborn of Seth Ayitey Obeng and Victoria Amarkai Nortey. She started her education at Fisheries Primary School at Osu and proceeded to Tenashie 1&2 Middle School at La, where she obtained the Middle School Leaving Certificate. Upon completion of her education, Vincentia took up petty trading, which she made a huge success of. She sold everything, from fruits and vegetables to clothing, cosmetics and groceries. She had a knack for goods that would sell fast and on which she would make the maximum profit. This sound grounding in commerce no doubt gave her the work ethos which took her to the top of her career in food service.
After emigrating from Ghana to America in 1989, with her two siblings James and Rosemary, Vincentia then went on to study at John F Kennedy Avt—school in Philadelphia where she studied Food Service. Vincentia has accomplished many achievements in her life. Vincentia became a US citizen in 2018.
After graduation, Vincentia landed many culinary roles till she found a home at Marcella Center/Complete Care, in New Jersey where she led a team as the head dietician for over 20 years. Vincentia took pride in her job and kept everything in order. She would wake up at 3:30 every morning to get ready for work she was always on time and never missed a day.
Vincentia dedicated her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother. Vincentia had her first son, Daryl (DJ), on March 23, 1992, and her second child, Seth (Pee) on August 21, 1997. She excelled at supporting DJ and Seth through many passions and difficulties in their lives. She always made sure her two sons were well taken care of
Vincentia was passionate about cooking and feeding others with her delicious meals made with love. Vincentia loved the kitchen there was not a day she wasn't in the kitchen cooking, she loved cooking her native Ghanaian food and American food. When she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found talking on the phone, watching the Nightly News, QVC, HSN shopping network, YouTube or on the Prayer Line. Vincentia enjoyed shopping for herself and others. She was always shopping at her favorite stores Sams Club, BJ's, and Boscov’s.
A mighty tree has fallen in our backyard. We have lost one of the matriarchs in the family - a wonderful daughter, mother, sister, cousin, auntie and a friend to many. Vincentia was graceful, gracious, meticulous, kind, commercially astute, a great conversationalist and a great cook. She was the very epitome of kindness and generosity. The sun never set on her anger - even in her chastisement there was peace and love and the odd giggle every now and then.
Vincentia is predeceased by her sister, Rosemary Obeng, and her father, Seth Obeng. Vincentia leaves behind her mother, Victoria Nortey, two children, Daryl Obeng-Williams and Seth Obeng-Williams, her nieces Victoria Obeng and Jamairah Obeng, and four siblings, James Obeng, Douglas Obeng, Rita Adumuah, Frederick Adumuah.
Vincentia is deeply mourned by the entire Nortey family at Osu and in London headed by her uncle Samuel Nortey, lots of cousins in Ghana and the United Kingdom including Elizabeth Longdon-Saffo and Enoch Saffo and the entire Obeng family in Accra Ghana.
Our beloved is also mourned by chief members of her extended family here in the states. Cecilia Quao, Dr. Samuel Quartey , Gladys Ackah, Victoria Largea, Solomon Adom, Juliet-Quao- Moss, Kinness K Harmon, Veronica Otoo, and Francis Addo and host of other friends and family members.
She will forever be in our hearts We will miss her greatly.
Marfua, wɔ jogban. Yehowa diɛntsɛ kɛ bo ato yɛ ekpɔkɔi amlin kɛ yashi bɛni wɔ baa kpe ekon. (Sleep well, Vincentia. May the Lord keep you safe and well until we meet again). Adieu.
