Obituary for Willie Mae Stewart
Willie Mae Stewart was born on August 2, 1921 in Macon Georgia to the late Moses Waters and Bertha Thomas Waters. She departed this life and into the arms of Jesus on April 25th, 2021.

Willie Mae Waters attended school in Georgia and graduated with a high school diploma. She accepted Christ at a young age and moved to Philadelphia in the late 1940’s with her husband, the late Army Sergeant Nathaniel Stewart. Willie continued her education at the William Penn Business Institute and was an active member and Usher of Vine Memorial Baptist Church for over 50 years. She served in many auxiliaries and functions under the late Reverend Leonard G. Carr, Reverend Murphy and Reverend James S. Allen, until her health began to decline
.
Willie Mae had a long and successful career working for the Federal Government for over forty years. The last twenty of those years she was a Payment Examiner with the Social Security Administration from which she retired in 1986. She was awarded many accolades for her excellent work.

Willie Mae was genuinely concerned about her neighborhood and the advancement of Civil Rights. Miss Willie, as her neighbors called her, once held the position of Block Captain for the 1400 Block of N 56th St. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, and, was one of the first African Americans to be associated with the Christian Street Branch of the YMCA of Philadelphia.
Furthermore, in addition to belonging to the Order of the Eastern Star, she held active memberships in the Urban League of Philadelphia and the NAACP.
Willie was known as a sharp dresser and took great pride in the upkeep and appearance of her property and neighborhood.

Our Aunt Mae’s – we affectionately referred to her as Amae - mantra in life was “Put Your trust in God. He will always see you through!”

Willie Mae was preceded in death by her father, Moses Waters; her mother Bertha Waters; sisters Agnes Waters and Juanita Horne. She leaves to mourn her loss, her nephews Ronald M. Horne of King of Prussia PA and Duane S. Horne of Lafayette Hill PA. Grand nieces and nephews, Tamara Horne, Duane Horne Jr., Maurice Horne and Myron Horne in addition to a host of great grandnieces and grandnephews, distant family members and close friends.
To those who knew her, Willie Mae Stewart will always be remembered for her elegance, pride and constant admonition of putting your best foot forward. However, to Ronnie and Stevie, she will be remembered as our doting Amae, always demanding excellence, yet loving and caring.

Don’t Weep For Me

Don’t weep for me
For I’ve made it home
Through Heavens gates
There I may roam.
Wipe your tears
And dry your eyes
I’m in a better place
With Heaven as my prize.
Don’t weep for me
No tears and no sorrow
Live life for Jesus
He promises tomorrow.
