ANNETTE ELIZABETH JENKINS
Sunrise, November 15, 1938 Sunset, August 8, 2022
Annette was born on November 15, 1938, to Joseph and Rachel Dickerson (nee Thurston) in Washington, District of Columbia. She was the third of seven children born to this union. Her mother passed a short time before giving birth to the youngest child, Wendell, and he also passed.
Her father, Joseph, later met and married Mae Bertha Hooks (nee Ward). This union created a close blended family to include: Charles Edward Hooks, Bernice Hooks Edmonds, Carol Lee Hooks Washington, James Walter Hooks, Robert Hooks, Joseph Collins, Charles Dickerson, Marjorie Dickerson, Robert Dickerson, George Dickerson, and Safia Dickerson Abdullah.
Annette began her formal education in the Louisa County Public Schools at ‘C’ Elementary School. When the family relocated to Philadelphia, PA, Annette attended Shoemaker Junior High School and graduated from Overbrook High School in 1958.
As a teen, Annette, enjoyed interpretive dancing and won roller skating competitions. After high school, Annette furthered her education by attending business school. Annette was a fierce protector of her family. When her father lost employment, Annette, paid the bills. Her father was known to have said he would not have made it without her. Her younger siblings noted, that long after they were grown and self – sufficient, Annette, always looked out for them and checked to see if they needed anything.
As a young adult, Annette met and married, Ronald Colen, Sr. The family settled at 5010 Walnut Street, and welcomed a son, Ronald “Skip” Jr. They relocated to the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia and welcomed a second son, Rodney.
Through the years, Annette held several positions of progressive responsibility. After retiring, Annette married Edward L. Jenkins, who passed away shortly after their union.
Annette was a faithful member of Greater Faith Baptist Church who served on the Usher Board and helped train young ushers. She was also a dedicated member of the Caroline E. Boardley Chapter No. 49, Order of Eastern Star, PHA, PA; Past Worthy Matron. North Star Court No. 1, Heroines of Jericho, PHA, PA; Past Most Ancient Matron and Past Most Ancient Matron of the Heroines School of Instruction. Annette enjoyed listening to R & B, but she loved listening to Al Green. She also watched games shows and Law and Order. As her health declined, Annette’s son Rodney, siblings, and niece Desiree, were able to support and care for her, much in the same ways that she looked out for them during most of her life.
